Coffee to Try in Ubud
Bali being the volcanic island that it is, is gifted with rich and fertile soils producing some incredible coffees. Here are some Balinese coffees you need to try while on the island:
LUWAK COFFEE | Luwak is the most expensive coffee on the planet. That’s pretty cool and reason enough to try it right? Well, the way this coffee is produced and its unique flavor is the cause for its price tag. Luwak coffee is derived from cuvets, a small cat-like animal, that eats the coffee berries, poops out the seeds, and those seeds are roasted and served.
KINTAMANI COFFEE | Kintamani Balinese coffee is known for its citrusy, sour flavor - much different from your typical cup of coffee. This coffee requires a unique harvesting process and is farmed in the Mt Batur area, up to 900m above sea level.
Indonesian Food to Try in Ubud
The Balinese/Indonesian cuisine is some of my favorite in the world. It’s flavorful, spicy, mostly naturally gluten-free, and can easily be made vegetarian. I am not exclusively vegetarian but I enjoy access to some of the most beloved Balinese dishes in a vegetarian option at most restaurants. Balinese food is derived from Indonesian cuisine but with a Bali twist. You will see similarities in Balinese food with many parts of Asia including dishes with a rice base, kebabs, and spice.
While you are visiting, here are the Balinese foods you need to try:
NASI GORENG / MIE GORENG | Nasi = rice, Mie = noodles, Goreng = fried. So fried rice and fried noodle dishes! They usually come stir-fried with vegetables such as carrots and cabbage, a protein, egg, and chilis.
NASI CAMPUR | Nasi = rice, Campur = mixture. This is a Malay/Indonesian dish with white rice and an assortment of sides to mix in with the rice. This may include protein like chicken satay or tempe, fried nuts, shredded coconut, a mix of steamed vegetables, krupuk, and sambal.
BABI GULING | AKA Balinese suckling pig, a delicacy and official dish of Bali. It is usually served with rice, lawar, shredded coconut, and vegetables.
LAWAR | Lawar is another Balinese delicacy consisting of finely minced coconut, vegetables, herbs, and spices. Commonly a side for Nasi Campur and Babi Guling and sometimes includes minced meat.
SATE (SATAY) LILIT | Minced protein wrapped around bamboo skewers and roasted over a coconut shell flame. A popular satay option in restaurants is satay ayam which is minced chicken.
LUMPIA | Often served as an appetizer, lumpia is a deep-fried spring roll typically filled with chopped vegetables and sometimes minced chicken.
KRUPUK | An Indonesian cracker snack made from starch or animal skin that is deep fried. Often provided as an appetizer and delicious dipped in Sambal.
SAMBAL MATAH | Chilis, shallots, lemongrass, and oil are freshly mixed together and used essentially as a condiment with your Balinese meal.
JAMU | Traditional Indonesian medicine drink consisting of turmeric and ginger.
TIP | If you love spice, ask for chopped chilis on the side. You can get ask for chilis at any restaurant and they will have them.

Lazy Cats Cafe
Lazy Cats Cafe is a vintage decor cafe serving healthy vegetarian dishes and coffees with comfortable indoor and balcony seating. During the evenings on weekends, they have live music and sell iconic artwork and prints. Lazy Cats has good wifi, good vibes, and super kind staff. It’s a great spot to meet up with friends, new or old, and stay a while.

Papege s Warung
A humble, locally-run warung sitting across from beautiful rice fields with cheap Indonesian dishes and smoothies averaging $0.60-$1.70 USD per plate. Can’t get much better than that! Papege s Warung is located off the busy Bisma Street on a quiet foot/scooter-only road. The warung has WiFi, a cute fluffy pup that visits you while you eat, and friendly locals.

Littletalks Ubud
Ah, Littletalks. I really love this little cafe for several reasons - walls of bookshelves filled with books you can pull and read while you eat or have a cup of coffee, a yummy menu of brunch and Balinese dishes, a small section featuring local artists, ample seating and particularly a cozy rooftop.

Warung Gauri
One of my favorite locally owned warungs in Ubud. Warung Gauri is tucked away off bustling Bisma Street facing rice fields. I am begging you to order the vegetarian nasi campur. For me. I mean look at that picture above - white rice surrounded by tempeh, lawar, eggplant, corn fritters, krupuk, roasted coconut and nuts, and more. Gauri serves some of the most consistently delicious Indonesian and Balinese food.
To make this place even better, a sweet little pug lives here and wanders around the restaurant. I don’t think they have wifi so this isn’t the best option to post up in but it’s absolutely worth coming for an authentic bite to eat.

KAFE is a popular health comfort food restaurant on a central, notable street in Ubud (Jl. Hanoman). KAFE serves a range of healthy flavors and offers dishes suit for anyone with dietary restrictions including raw, vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, keto, carnivore, and pescatarian. Many of the vegetables in the KAFE dishes are locally grown and organic. The cafe itself is 2-3 levels with indoor seating (air-conditioned) and outdoor seating on balconies, fast WiFi, and incredible staff that really cares about you and your comfort while hanging out here.

Sudi Mampir Warung
Sudi Mampir Warung is THE local spot you want to come to for drinks and a late-night, cheap meal. Not a place to bring your laptop, but a place to come for a good time with locals. Wayan, a rambunctious man that works here, is the star of the show and will encourage you to a Balinese liquor and a plate of Mie Goreng. Say yes to all of it.

Lucky Family Coffee & Food
Located towards the end of quiet and calm Bisma Street is Lucky Family Coffee & Food. The air conditioning hits strong at Lucky Family if that is what you are looking for! Otherwise, I recommend sitting outside on the second-level balcony with a nice breeze and overlooking homes and rice fields. They serve Balinese food and some Western food as do most Bali cafes with high-quality ingredients.

Black Eye Coffee & Roastery
Order on the bottom level, and get comfortable on the top level while you wait for one of the best coffees you can find in Ubud! Black Eye Coffee & Roastery actually has 2 locations in Central Ubud. The location I liked best and returned to is the one pictured (and the address below). Black Eye is set up for those who work on their laptops with bar seating, balcony bar seating, and more comfortable table seating (though little seating overall) with access to outlets and a great WiFi connection.
They serve excellent lattes (with milk alternatives) and the chocolate croissant is to die for. It is an ideal location and environment for someone looking to slow down for a few hours.

Mingle Cafe & Bar
All-day breakfast. Need I say more? As the name suggests, Mingle encourages community. It is a very comfortable place to rest up for a bit from the tropical heat with a juice, a coffee, cocktail, and/or a fulfilling meal. So I mentioned they have all-day breakfast. They also serve Balinese food, pasta, salads, and burgers. I highly recommend their Balinese tapas plate to share with your group!
Location: Jl. Dewisita, Ubud, Kecamatan Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali 80571, Indonesia - Get directions on Google Maps
Ary’s Book Cafe
I walked into Ary’s Book Cafe in search of water and maybe a juice and ended up staying around for a coffee, a snack, and reading my book for almost 2 hours. The vibes are GREAT. Beautiful gardens with lush greenery and ponds you can sit by are located towards the back of the cafe. Balinese music plays, Balinese food is served, and the staff are incredibly kind in Balinese fashion.

Duatiga Cafe
Duatiga Cafe, located up a set of stairs, open-air, and overlooking the popular Monkey Forest Rd, is another favorite of mine. Incredible staff greet you at the entrance and help you find a table. The service is quick and the ambiance invites you to stay a while. Fast WiFi, healthy food options (try the falafel bowl pictured), fresh juices, and the people brought me back here time and time again.
On weekend evenings there is also live music and affordable cocktails!

Papa Ubud
Cheap cocktails and food on Monkey Forest Rd in Ubud - yes, please! Papa Ubud offers a mix of authentic Balinese cuisine and Western eats for those who prefer a good burger. Their lumpia was some of the best I had come across (that didn’t come from a warung, of course). Great atmosphere, a couple of levels of plentiful seating, and excellent service.
TIP | If you are like me and love the late-night live music that is played at many of the bars on Monkey Forest but you don’t really jive with being in such a loud, stimulating environment, come to Papa Ubud. Its location is close enough to No Mas Bar & The Blue Door that if they have DJs/live performances you can hear them well from Papa Ubud without the overwhelming factor and crowds of it. (I know from personal experience 😉).

BitterSweet Ubud
It’s rare that BitterSweet Ubud is packed with people. While the interior looks and feels high-end (and the food here certainly tastes this way as well), BitterSweet is a favorite to bring my laptop to for the access to outlets and fast internet paired with a tasty and healthy menu and coffees. Tucked away in the back of a gallery on one of the busiest streets in Ubud, this little place is a must-visit.

Zest
If you are looking for a bohemian-style, plant-based restaurant, in the treetops of the surrounding jungle, this is it. They offer more than a wide range of healthy eats, but also spiritual fests, and community events, and while it’s optional, you’ll find most people remove their shoes before entering the restaurant. Zest sounds like the stereotypical meeting point for foreigners coming to Bali to find themselves and eat clean, right? It’s worth knowing that’s kinda very much what it is…🙈 Regardless, it still has delicious food!

Titik Temu Cafe
Located near Ubud Palace on a more quiet road is Titik Temu Cafe. Temu is an Indonesian word meaning “meeting point” and is the intention behind this coffee shop. Two levels provide a range of contemporary community tables, some with chair seating and some with floor seating. Luckily, if you happen to also be heading to or near Seminyak, they have a location there as well! Grab a coffee and pastry when visiting Titik Temu.

Watercress Ubud
Watercress Ubud - delicious brunch menu, delicious lunch menu, delicious dinner menu. I think Watercress really embodies the wave of modern cafe culture rolling through Ubud. They have been featured in many travel magazines and websites as a top cafe to visit in Bali for their local farmer-partnered ingredients, abundant menu selection, and curated dining experience day and night.

Ivy Cafe
Easily one of my favorite cafes I returned to again and again. (I feel like I’ve said this already about other cafes in this blog 😅). If you are looking for a great spot flooded with digital nomads, with good food and coffee, healthy juices, ample indoor and outdoor seating, and plenty of electrical outlets at every table, this is it. The menu covers it all - Balinese food, western food, healthy-conscious food, and for an affordable price. Ivy Cafe is almost always busy because of its location at a hotel popular among young people coming and going for drinks and lunch.

Pesona Lounge Ubud
The best Indian food in Ubud. Pesona Lounge Ubud is a modern Indian restaurant with an emphasis on modernity. They strive for the best and freshest, locally sourced ingredients and a menu that caters to anyone’s dietary preferences and constraints while staying authentic to Indian cuisine. Little touches like topping drinks with flower petals, serving unique and complex drinks, and offering hookah round out the experience at Pesona.
If you are coming for dinner, make reservations ahead of time!

Ubud Coffee Roastery
You must try Ubud Coffee Roastery for one thing - the coffee, of course. Located right across the street from Pesona Lounge, Ubud Coffee Roastery is a local shop serving locally sourced Kintamani beans that are roasted on-site. The shop itself is aesthetic with indoor and outdoor seating on a quiet road and is packed with remote workers most times of the day.
To be completely honest though, while they provide complimentary WiFi, the two times I came here to stay around for a bit, the WiFi connection was not good and I had to leave for elsewhere. Worth trying out for yourself whether you are there for a long time or just for the coffee experience.

Simply Social
Simply Social serves a mix of healthy tropical/Balinese meals like acai bowls and smoothies, Asian food such as stir fry and curries, and more Western dishes like pasta and burgers. It is centrally located across the street from Ubud Palace, so a good fallback spot in the area where you know you will find a range of good food for everyone in your group. There’s bustling, street-facing seating, or more comfortable, quiet tables towards the back. Regardless, Simply Social is almost always busy with patrons coming and going and some nestled into the restaurant for a few hours with friends.

Bella by Sage
Bella by Sage is a homemade-vegan cafe located in the heart of Ubud boasting a calming ambiance and gorgeously plated dishes with a focus on Italian. I found their vegan food as some of my favorite around Ubud. The service is top-notch, the atmosphere quiet and modern, and you leave feeling good after a filling meal here.
