Bajan Drinks to Try in Barbados

There are several drinks that Barbados is known for - some contain alcohol, some do not. But the pride of the country is the historic Mount Gay rum, often used in the popular cocktail, rum punch. Let’s get into a list of drinks to try in Barbados.

  • RUM PUNCH | The cocktail of Barbados! You can get a rum punch *literally* anywhere on the island, including pre-bottled at convenience stores. Rum punch is a citrusy mixture of Bajan rum, syrup for extra sweetness, fruit juice, and grenadine. The composure can change depending on where you get a rum punch, as some restaurants have their twist on the popular drink!

  • FRESH COCONUT | Being on a tropical island, you’ll occasionally see fresh coconuts being sold on the side of the road. Nature’s sweet, nutrient-dense hydration source!

  • BANKS BEER | The pilsner lager beer of Barbados.

  • MOUNT GAY RUM | Mount Gay is the oldest rum distillery in the world. It’s a landmark alcohol that the island is very proud of!

  • BAYAN LEMONADE | A refreshing lemonade made with fresh lemons or limes. It contains sugar, water, and bitters, adding an island twist.

Bajan Food to Try in Barbados

Whether it’s a dish traditional to Barbados or one with international influence and a Bajan twist, the list of foods to try in Barbados is a foodie’s dream. The Barbados cuisine is a mix of fresh fish dishes and hearty, carby comfort foods. Here are some of the most popular foods and dishes to try in Barbados.

  • FLYING FISH CUTTER | The dish of Barbados! Flying fish is filleted, fried, put in a Bajan bread roll, and eaten as a sandwich. Some variations add tomato, lettuce, and a spicy pepper sauce. It is a staple Barbadian street food item!

  • PUDDING AND SOUSE | A dish with historic significance dating back hundreds of years, eaten still today, traditionally on Saturdays. It consists of a sweet potato mash and pickled pork dressed in a tangy sauce.

  • MACARONI PIE | It’s exactly as the name suggests. Macaroni and cheese baked in a casserole form with a rich combination of cheese, cream, and Bajan spices. The ultimate comfort food!

  • PASTRIES | Specifically turnovers, jam puffs, and horseshoes…YUMMY. A turnover is a sweet and doughy pastry, traditionally made with a coconut filling. A jam puff is a sugary and flaky pastry filled with jam. And a horseshoe is essentially a jam puff in the shape of a horseshoe.

  • ROTI | A popular dish in Barbados with influence from Trinidad and Indian cuisine. It is typically flatbread filled with a curry cooked with Bajan spices. You can find this all over the island at sit-down restaurants, casual eateries, and food stalls, and at the Barbadian fast-food chain, Chefette.

  • FISH CAKES | Fritters made usually of cod, potato, onion, spices, and eaten as an appetizer. Dip them in Barbados pepper sauce for an extra kick of heat!

  • FRESH SEAFOOD | The seafood doesn’t get fresher than on a small tropical island where menus are determined based on the catch of the day. The most popular fish are mahi-mahi (dolphinfish), flying fish, swordfish, snapper, and marlin.
