Georgian Drinks to Try in Tbilisi

There are several drinks that Georgia is known for - some contain alcohol, some do not. But the pride of the country by far is Georgian wine. Let’s get into a list of drinks to try in Georgia.

  • GEORGIAN WINE | Georgia's most culturally significant drink is wine. Traditionally processed in underground clay vessels called qvevri using the native Saperavi grape, Georgian wine tastes unlike most other wines worldwide (in the best way).

  • CHACHA | Made from the leftover grapes from winemaking, chacha is a twice-distilled liquor with high potency - usually 50%+ but often 70%+ from home brews

  • GEORGIAN CRAFT BEER | Two of my favorite craft beers from Georgia are Black Lion IPA and Alkhanaidze beer

  • BORJOMI WATER | Naturally carbonated mineral water from the Borjomi Gorge in Central Georgia

  • LAGIDZE WATER | A fizzy drink made with natural syrups and flavors

Georgian Food to Try in Tbilisi

Georgian cuisine is heavy with bread, dairy, and DELICIOUSNESS. Full disclosure, if you have a dairy or gluten intolerance you may have difficulty navigating some of the traditional cuisine. Even so, there is a decent range of restaurants popping up around Tbilisi where you can find meals (not Georgian) within your dietary restrictions or that serve variations of these must-try Georgian foods. Everyone should try these key Georgian dishes if you can during their visit to Tbilisi, Georgia!

  • KHACHAPURI | Cheese-filled bread - some in a boat-shaped pastry with egg, some in a pizza shape (imeruli khachapuri)

  • KHINKALI | A Georgian version of the dumpling but much larger. Traditionally stuffed with meat, fish, or vegetables

  • PKHALI | Cooked vegetables ground in with walnut paste to create a spread (pkhali)

  • CHURCHKHELA | Georgian sweet that consists of nuts strung together and coated in a grape juice mixture and cured for days

  • KHARCHO | A hearty beef stew in a rich, spiced broth, sometimes served with rice

  • SHKMERULI | Chicken simmered in a bold garlic sauce

  • AJAPSANDALI | Vegetarian Georgian dish primarily consisting of roasted eggplant, bell pepper, tomato, etc in oil and herbs

  • SHOTIS PURI | A famous canoe-shaped Georgian bread, traditionally baked in a deep clay oven

  • GEORGIAN SALAD | Tomatoes, cucumber, herbs, and walnut paste - very similar to a Mediterranean salad

  • MEGRELIAN CUISINE | A cuisine from the North-Western region of Georgia (Samegrelo Region) best known for ghomi and sulguni cheese

33 Best Restaurants, Bars, & Wineries in Tbilisi

Georgian Restaurants

Ethno Tsiskvilia

One of the best places in Tbilisi to have a traditional Georgian dinner and a show is at Ethno Tsiskvilia. Georgian music and dance are performed in a cozy, ornate setting with a menu containing all of your favorite Georgian dishes.

It is recommended to make a reservation if you’d like to sit in the live entertainment section.

📍Location: 99 Akaki Beliashvili St, Tbilisi, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Zala Restaurant and Cellar

Wow! Truly one of my favorite restaurants in Tbilisi. Not only for the food, but for the ambiance, staff, and occasional live music. Zala Restaurant and Cellar is an inviting restaurant near Rustaveli Station that has gone above and beyond with attention to detail, the priority of fresh ingredients, and an excellent selection of local wines and musicians.

📍Location: 2 Belinski St, Tbilisi, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Shavi Lomi

A recommendation to us by several locals was Shavi Lomi. Beautiful restaurant with moody indoor and patio seating and some of the best service we had dining in Tbilisi. The menu is elevated Georgian style, a little pricier than most similar restaurants but worthwhile nonetheless for the delectable flavors and pleasant, intimate environment.

📍Location: 28 Zurab Kvlividze St, Tbilisi, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Mravaljamieri

Another location to see Georgian folk dance in Tbilisi while you dine. Mravaljamieri is popular among tourists and boasts big dining rooms in a relaxed environment.

This dinner and show is more casual and touristy than at Ethno Tsiskvilia.

A yummy breakfast and brunch restaurant in Tbilisi is Chaduna! Not only do they serve great breakfast, but they are also a wine bar, and coffee shop, and stay open until 11 PM. While they have a fairly reserved menu consisting of a few breakfast dishes, bruschetta, and Chaduna specials, you are sure to find something delicious here. I highly recommend you try the Chizhi Bizhi (Georgian shakshuka), veggie quesadilla, and Syrniki (cottage cheese pancake).

Puri Guliani

Well-known for its pastries and desserts, Puri Guliani also serves a breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu consisting of a mix of traditional Georgian and Westernized dishes with stunning views of Kura River.

📍Location: Saarbrucken Square Tbilisi Tbilisi, 0102, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Veriko

Veriko could be argued as “not true Georgian” because its menu consists of a mix of traditional dishes with an international, modern twist, plus some plates that just fall out of the Georgian category altogether. However, I think this is appealing to many people as well, to change up the cuisine and enjoy truly delicious and complex flavors with a touch of authenticity.

The pan-fried cauliflower steak with truffle sauce and Georgian salad were astounding.

Bonus: Some sweet kitties joined us for dinner

📍Location: 1 Vasil Petriashvili Street, Tbilisi 0179, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Other Restaurants (Not Georgian Cuisine)

The following are some of my tried, tested, and loved favorites for restaurants around Tbilisi that are NOT Georgian cuisine. You will see a wide mix of cuisines below - all of which I have eaten myself. For when you need to change up the routine of Georgian food 😉

Thai Royal Cuisine Tbilisi (Thai)

The Kitchen (New American)

The Kitchen was one of the few new American restaurants that I found in Tbilisi with consistently exceptional quality and range of dishes that itched that desire for healthy modern dishes. The Kitchen is located in ROOMS Hotel Tbilisi, a beautiful 4-star hotel. The prices reflect this but a cozy dining room, good staff, and delicious food make it worth it.

Farina Tbilisi (Pizza)

For high-quality wood-fired pizza in Tbilisi, visit Farina - you won’t be disappointed. All orders are made to order and fresh so a short wait is made worthwhile for the quality pizza to share with friends. A small amount of seating is available indoors and standing tables outside.

Try the Diavola pizza… 👌

📍Location: 1 Vashlovani St, Tbilisi 0108, Georgia - Get directions on Google Maps

Cheri Pasta Bar (Italian)

Located in a historical building is Cheri Pasta Bar - serving an excellent pasta menu that really sets the bar high for Italian food in Tbilisi. Authentic, homemade pasta, top-notch service, and vegetarian-friendly with a good selection of meat-free dishes. I highly recommend trying the risotto with roasted red pepper!

TIP: If the dining room on the 1st floor is full, head up to a cocktail bar called SNOBS on the top floor. SNOBS and Cheri are partnered so you can order the full Cheri food menu in this bar where we found it typically easier to grab a table than downstairs in the official Cheri dining location. Also, the vibe upstairs is better in my opinion with dim lighting and dark decor.

Bars

41° Art of Drinks

41° Art of Drinks is a speakeasy-type basement cocktail bar with a hand-written and curated cocktail menu. Entering through the sliding metal door in a spooky-looking alleyway, you descend downstairs into an aesthetically pleasing, modern space with vibey music, low light, and awesome bartenders. Besides their trendy cocktail menu (which you can definitely order from), the staff likes to start off by asking you some questions to get an idea of what drink you may like best. Such as your mood that evening, if you’re feeling more sweet, sour, bitter, what your usual drink of choice is. They just may make some custom and special just for you! It’s a very intimate, unique cocktail experience and one of the best in Tbilisi.

Grab a drink and a seat on one of the comfortable couches and enjoy the night.

Room 14

The bar in Tbilisi I frequented the most during my time here was Room 14. Because of its convenient location to where we were staying but mostly because of the staff, drinks, and rustic, simplicity of this place. We became lifelong friends with the staff that work here.

Right next door is a karaoke bar owned by the same people!

Like 8000 Vintages, there are several Winery Khareba locations around Tbilisi and Georgia, plus, a wine cave in Khaketi. Winery Khareba is one of the country's largest wine producers of Georgian and European wines, with over 1,500 hectares of vineyards across Georgia. If you visit a winery you can expect to see a collection of qvevri and European-produced wines to try in a tasting.

I have visited the Khareba Wine Cave in Khaketi and a winery location in Tbilisi. I highly recommend both!

I took a guided tour through the Kakheti wine region, including a stop at the Khareba Wine Cave. You can book that tour here!

Pet-Nat Wine Shop

One of my favorite small and locally owned wine shops in this part of Tbilisi is Pet-Nat Wine Shop. This cozy shop offers a humble but mighty wine selection available for tasting and purchase. The owner and staff are very kind and helpful - recommending the best wine for your preferred taste.
