14 of the Best Restaurants in La Gaulette and Le Morne: Where to Eat on Southwest Mauritius Coast

Mauritian cuisine is a reflection of the island's rich history and diverse cultural influences. Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has been a crossroads of different cultures for centuries, resulting in a unique blend of Indian, Chinese, African, European, and Creole culinary traditions.

Indian cuisine is the largest influence on Mauritian food, and many dishes are inspired by the spices, herbs, and cooking techniques of India. African cuisine has also left its mark on Mauritian food, with Creole cuisine being a distinct part of the local culinary tradition. You will notice among these cuisines, a French twist with the use of baguettes and carbs in otherwise Asian culinary dishes.

Overall, Mauritian cuisine is diverse, flavorful, and a reflection of the island's rich history and cultural influences and there are a lot of local cuisines, restaurants, and otherwise to try while in Mauritius (including Southwest Mauritius in the popular, small tourist towns of La Gaulette and Le Morne).

How to Get to the Southwest Mauritius Coast

The international airport of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, is located on the Eastern coast of Mauritius. There are two routes to get from the airport to La Gaulette/Le Morne; through Black River Gorges National Park via B103 or along the South coast via B9.

  • Via B103: about 50km (31 miles) 1-hour drive. This route has more twists, turns, and elevation gains. Even though it is slightly shorter, I would recommend the B9 route instead.

  • Via B9: about 55km (34 miles) 1-hour 15-minute drive. This is an easier drive and one where you will drive through lush sugar cane fields and along the South Coast.

From arrival at the airport, you have the option of renting a car to drive yourself, hiring a taxi to drive you to Southwest Mauritius, or scheduling a driver upon your arrival ahead of time. There is also a bus route but this is not an efficient option as it will take significantly longer to get across the island.

How to Get Around Southwest Mauritius

Car

By far the best way to get around Southwest Mauritius (and Mauritius as a whole) is by car. I made a whole blog post about renting a car in Mauritius as a foreigner that will answer all your questions about this mode of transportation. In short, it’s easy to do and a worthwhile expense. Read that here:

Walking

While a rental car is the best option for you in order to explore the Southwest region of Mauritius with this itinerary, you can get around just La Gaulette and Le Morne by foot easily. The villages are small and everything you need like grocery stores, restaurants, and ATMs are within walking distance from just about anywhere you base yourself in town. You can’t walk from La Gaulette TO Le Morne however. There are no sidewalks most of the way and would take over an hour.

Day Hire/Taxi

Hiring your own driver is the next best option if you don’t rent a car. There are a couple of ways to go about this:

  • Day Hire: This is where you book a driver to pick you up from your hotel/homestay to take you anywhere you’d like around the island for a day (or multiple days). We actually did this in addition to having our own rental car because it’s a great way to learn about the place you are visiting. You have a built-in local tour guide and someone to give additional recommendations along the way! You can book these online or even some taxi drivers will offer this service for you.

  • Taxi: La Gaulette has a small taxi stand located centrally off the main road (B9) in town that you can try stopping by to get a cab. In addition, every now and then taxi drivers will drive through and wave you down to see if you need a ride if you are on the main road. The hosts of your accommodation can help arrange a taxi for you if you are having any trouble finding one. Taxis are one of the most readily available options for transportation but are a tad more scarce in the La Gaulette/Le Morne area given its size.

Bus

Mauritius has an efficient bus system that connects villages and is a popular mode of transportation for locals. It is also the cheapest transportation option for foreigners but there are some things to know:

  • Most of the buses are not air-conditioned. They typically just have open windows to allow air to flow through.

  • At peak times of the day, the buses are pretty packed. This is typically early morning and evening (locals going to work and coming home from work). I recommend avoiding traveling by bus during these times if you can.

  • It will take you longer to get around on the bus than in a car.

  • Bring cash to pay for your bus fare.

  • Some bus stops are literally just metal posts with a small sign on them that says “BUS STOP.” Others have awnings and seatings.

  • Always take an umbrella with you if you are planning to take the bus and happen to need to wait at a bus stop with no covering from rain or sun while you wait.

  • Check bus routes and plan your bus itinerary using this website.

14 of the Best Restaurants in La Gaulette and Le Morne

1. Heritage Sunset (La Gaulette)

Locally owned and a short trek up the northern part of La Gaulette is the quaint Heritage Sunset restaurant. The owners, a lovely married couple, source their ingredients locally. For example, their samosas are made by a local vendor and as we were eating dinner here (one of the 3 times) a freshly caught tuna was being brought up to her restaurant to use for dinner and lunch tomorrow by a local fisherman. Heritage Sunset provides an authentic Mauritian-Creole experience. Try the fish curry!

2. Aloha (La Gaulette)

Aloha is a healthy mix of Western, Asian, and African cuisine in a limited menu. Their tofu rice bowls are 👌 - I came back for these more than once. The owner is there every day and is very welcoming. Aloha is located centrally in La Gaulette in an open-air, modern setting.

3. Chez Bhim (La Gaulette)

Anything that starts with Chez is a local cuisine dream. If you want a real authentic experience, visit Chez Bhim and order fried noodles and bouille. Chez Bhim is a roadside shack so nothing fancy but you will be sure to quench your Mauritian comfort food cravings.

4. Ocean Vagabond (La Gaulette)

One of the few places in the area with exceptional pizza, pasta, & wine is Ocean Vagabond. Even a pizza joint can have its Mauritian twists with special pizza topping options that bring the local taste. There are 2 levels of seating. I recommend the top level if you are coming to dinner around sunset. You will have views through some small windows of sunset and Le Morne.

5. Chez BB (La Gaulette)

Home-cooked Mauritian food with a fan favorite - rotis! These Mauritian rotis are the roti bread you likely are aware of filled with veggies and/or a protein. A bonus for Chez BB is the local, affordable prices you can expect to pay.

6. Eldorade Resto & Bar (La Gaulette)

A small place on the side of the road with just 2 tables sells some of my favorite French-Mauritian-inspired pastries and coffees. Bonus points for the affordability and view of lush, green mountains at Eldorade Resto & Bar.

7. Enso Restaurant & Lounge Bar (La Gaulette)

Enso Restaurants & Lounge Bar is a bar with a wide selection of foods ranging from curries to burgers and a good cocktail menu. This restaurant feels most catered to the tourists but one big reason for including it on this list is the live performances of Mauritian artists that perform regularly. When there is live music, Enso is the place to be for tourists and locals alike. Great vibes that make you feel a part of the community! Visit Enso’s Facebook page for the latest on upcoming shows.

8. Frizzy (La Gaulette)

Frizzy is a casual dinner spot in town with welcoming owners and homemade tastes. Just another banger option for Mauritian cuisine in La Gaulette.

9. Liverpool Snack (La Gaulette)

Don’t judge a book by its cover as they say. Also don’t judge a restaurant by the way it looks on the outside. Liverpool Snack is said to have some of the best noodles in town and is one of the few places in La Gaulette with seaview seating.

10. Wapalapam Island Eatery (Le Morne Brabant)

One of the few restaurant options in Le Morne not in a resort. Wapalapam Island Eatery has an excellent selection of Indian Ocean cuisine, vegetarian options, and cocktails. This restaurant is nestled at the foothills of Le Morne mountain and from certain outdoor tables you get a stunning view of it.
