Best Time to Visit Flic en Flac & How Many Days

Mauritius has two seasons; winter which runs May - October and is drier and cooler and summer which runs November - April and is considered the rainy season with warmer, more humid days. People say Winter is the best season to visit Mauritius for its winter sun and affordable prices.

We visited in March which fell in the “rainy season.” It did rain almost every day but was manageable and actually enjoyable because the rain helped cool down the hottest of days. I don’t think there is a wrong time to visit Mauritius and particularly the West coast but rain is the biggest battle depending on the time of year you visit.

I recommend staying in Flic en Flac for 2-4 days depending on how much time you have in Mauritius.

How to Get to Flic en Flac

The international airport of Mauritius, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, is located on the Eastern coast of Mauritius. There is one main route to get from the airport to Flic en Flac and that is via M2. This route is about 44km (27 miles) and a little over an hour's drive, taking you through the central regions of the island to the West Coast. Depending on traffic you may be detoured through surrounding towns. Get directions on Google Maps.

From arrival at the airport, you have the option of renting a car to drive yourself, hiring a taxi to drive you to Flic en Flac, or scheduling a driver upon your arrival ahead of time. There is also a bus route but this is not an efficient option as it will take significantly longer to get across the island.

11 Best Things to Do in Flic en Flac (besides the beach)

1. Have a Spa Day

The next most relaxing thing other than laying on a beach all day? A spa day. And there is no shortage of spas in Flic en Flac. Here are a few:

2. Dolphin & Whale Watching Excursion (ethically)

A very popular activity all around Mauritius is dolphin and whale watching but booking this kind of excursion with agencies that put the animals, their habitat, and well-being as a priority is the responsible and ethical way to view these beautiful creatures. Below I have listed some agencies in Flic en Flac that do just that per their websites:

3. Go Bowling at Wonder Bowl

It was such a nice change of pace doing something I hadn’t done since I was a kid! A short drive from the Flic en Flac coast is Wonder Bowl Bowling Alley. This modern, newly constructed bowling alley with 10 lanes also serves a full menu and bar and has pool tables and arcade games.

TIP: If you go during a weekday around open time, you may luck out and have the place to yourself! (We did). Also, wear your own sneakers and you don’t have to wear/pay for the bowling shoes provided by the bowling alley.

4. Shopping Spree at Cascavelle Shopping Mall

Cascavelle Shopping Mall is a small outdoor mall in Flic en Flac with local and chain stores, cafes, and community events. It is in the same center as Wonder Bowl so you could visit both in one trip.

5. Take a Diving Course/Go Diving

Popular diving sites are all around you in Mauritius so there are numerous highly-rated diving courses and excursion agencies in Flic en Flac to choose from whether you want to get your certification or you already have it and want to dive into the depths of the Indian Ocean with a professional. Here are a few diving centers in Flic en Flac:

6. Eat a Traditional Roti from Farata AKA Vinoda

Located on Flic en Flac Beach is a small stand called Farata AKA Vinoda. Here they serve up traditional Mauritian farata wraps filled with your choice of chicken, veggies, or seafood. It’s a quick on-the-go snack and a popular spot for locals to line up for lunch. Get directions on Google Maps.

7. Rent a Scooter or Bicycle for a Day

A fun way to see the village of Flic en Flac and the surrounding villages and coastline is to rent either a bike or scooter to get around.

8. Explore the Rocky Shores of Searock Avenue

In the North of Flic en Flac, the white sandy beaches turn into a rocky shoreline showing off a beautiful coastal view you usually don’t seek out in Flic en Flac. You can access this shoreline by public paths between houses on Searock Avenue (or Avenue des Bretons). See the map below for Google Maps entry points.

9. Barhop Around the Local Bars

Coastal Rd, the main road along the coast in Flic en Flac, is lined with bars and restaurants. Spend an evening bar hopping, enjoying the strong African drinks, music, and vibes. Here are some of my favorite places to grab a drink along Coastal Rd:

10. See a Traditional Mauritian Sega Dance

Sega is a traditional dance and song originating from the enslavement of Africans on the island of Mauritius as a way to express the sorrows and power to overcome slavery by colonizers in the early 1900s. Many hotels, resorts, and restaurants around Mauritius (and Flic en Flac) host Sega performances for visitors to experience. I recommend googling sega dances happening in Flic en Flac during your stay and asking around to locals and your hotel if they know of any coming up.

11. Hike to a Waterfall Cascading into the Ocean

About a 15-minute drive North of central Flic en Flac is Bassin Vert (get directions on google maps)- an area where a waterfall falls into a rocky cove of the Indian Ocean. This unique sight requires a short hike where sneakers are required, avoidance during monsoon season, and a guide preferred to keep you safe but it’s worth the trek to get to.

If you try to go by yourself, take precautions like checking the weather, bringing plenty of water, and watching your step closely. You can also book a guided hike there with Hiking Adventure Tours & Leisure.
