Rock Climbing
Rock climbers will have to sign a climbing release form but there are many opportunities for Enchanted Rock climbing adventures. You can find out more about rock climbing at Enchanted Rock here.
Star Gazing
Due to the lack of light pollution in the area, Enchanted Rock becomes even more enchanting at night when you can see unobstructed views of the night sky.
Search for Fairy Shrimp in the Vernal Pools
After it rains at Enchanted Rock, vernal pools form in craters all over the dome where you can hunt for the one-centimeter-long Fairy Shrimp. The most logical theory as to how these little guys get up on top of the dome is birds migrate from the gulf and drop the shrimp eggs in their feces on the dome. Birds most commonly seen on the gulf are often spotted at Enchanted Rock as well.
Picnic
Picnic tables are all over the park for your use! So bring along some meals for yourself, perch up on a table, and enjoy the view. Be respectful of those located near campsites to ensure you are not in someone’s space or being too noisy if campers may be resting nearby. And ALWAYS pick up your trash and the area after you are done.
Geocaching
Check out the Geocaching app or website for an added adventure to your visit to Enchanted Rock.
Tips for Visiting Enchanted Rock
Stay Hydrated
According to Rei.com, it is advised you drink half a liter of water every hour for moderate hiking at a moderate temperature. The hotter it is, the more water you need. Texas has very hot summers so come prepared and don’t let yourself get dehydrated.
Pack Hike-Friendly Snacks
Healthy snacks such as dried fruit, trail mix, granola or nuts & seeds help keep your energy up during your hike.
Review Pet Regulations Before Arriving
Pets are not allowed on any trails except the Loop Trail for their safety and for the conservation of the trails. Pets are also required to stay on leashes and are not allowed to be left at campsites or in vehicles. Also, pick up after your pets!
Save a Map on your Phone
You will be provided a paper map at the entrance of the park. If you don’t wish to carry around the physical map, visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife - Enchanted Rock information page (located here) ahead of your arrival where you can screenshot the downloadable PDF trail/camp/park maps to have available on your phone at all times.
Note: you may lose or have spotty cellphone service at Enchanted Rock which is why I encourage you to download these maps prior to your arrival.
Carpool
It’s better for the environment and will make finding parking easier. There is limited parking and during the busy months can get very crowded, quickly.
Check the Weather
Check the weather ahead of your arrival for 2 reasons:
If it has rained or will rain while you are there, there is a good chance that the Summit Trail to the top of the dome - the main attraction - will be closed. The granite gets slick when wet so this is for your safety. You can get confirmation of the operation of the trail by calling the park or visiting the Enchanted Rock Park Alerts page.
Heavy rain and storms can impact the operation of the other trails as well.
You are unprotected and out in the open on most of the trails. On sunny days, you should bring sunscreen and a hat for protection. On windy or cold days, it’s much more windy and cold at the top of the Summit Trail than it is on the ground (found this out the hard way) so you will thank yourself if you pack a couple of extra layers.
Wear Shoes with Good Traction
Especially if you plan to hike the Summit Trail to the top of the granite dome, come prepared with good traction shoes. The climb is steep but hiking boots/shoes really help keep a grip on your way up and down - even when it’s dry.
