Postcard Cabins (formerly Getaway House) in LaRue, TX: Nature Escape & Tiny House Living Near Dallas

(Updated: 2025)

As of October 2024, Getaway House has been rebranded to Postcard Cabins! Same website, same relaxing escape and cabins, new name.

I believe all people should experience a moment, a few days, a week, of pure peace. Humans live crazy lives. We work, we take care of others, we stress, we worry about the future, and we consume our lives on our phones. You deserve a getaway where you can unplug and reset now and then. Where you put away your electronics, surround yourself in the silence and purity of nature, and not...think or do.

That was kind of the idea that the founders of Postcard Cabins (formerly Getaway House), Jon Staff, and Pete Davis had in mind when they forged together with the idea of Getaway in 2015. A place to put your reality of life, however it may be, aside and live in seclusion.

Postcard Cabins is a collection of tiny houses on wheels in communities located in some of the most beautiful and nature-filled locations around the US. These tiny houses all look the same, they can sleep 2-4 people and are equipped with (literally) everything you could need besides the clothes on your back. Even food and firewood!

I stayed in the location about an hour & a half outside of Dallas; Postcard Cabins Piney Woods, located in LaRue, TX. For my Texas readers, there are 2 more Texas locations! One outside of Houston, and one outside of Austin. You can read about my Austin Postcard Cabin experience here!

For all locations across the US, visit their website.

Below I go into the details from what to expect inside your cabin, to price, to the mentally healing aura of this experience how visiting Postcard Cabins will become a more frequent norm for me, and why it should be for you too. If you are seeking nature escapes near Dallas, this is for you.

Inside Your Postcard Cabin

They have thought of everything. Just bring yourself, a change of clothes, a hammock, and a relaxed mindset. Postcard Cabins has the rest covered for you.

Bed

queen-size bed with crisp white sheets and a comforter is ready for your arrival! The temptation to jump right in and not move is real. Especially with a view like that!

If it's just two of you, you will only need the single-bed cabin but you can get a cabin that sleeps four and comes with two beds stacked on one another like a bunk bed.

The bed is lifted a bit with open storage underneath for our bags. The ledge up to the bed doubled as seating for the table.

The obvious is this massive window right next to your bed. There are blinds you can pull down to cover the windows for complete privacy at night if you wish. Waking up to these views though, can’t be beat.

Kitchen + Seating

These little cabins have a stocked kitchen with all the utensils, plates, and pots you’d need during your stay. It includes a running sink, a small fridge, and a two-burner stove - no oven or microwave, but that’s what the campfire is for.

You can purchase provisions provided by Postcard such as pasta, soup, cookies, coffee, hot chocolate, and more! This provision package can be purchased at checkout when booking.

Right across from the mini-kitchen was a table with a chair on one side and a bench on the other side.

Bathroom

The small bathroom had a flushing toilet, a hot water shower, and clean towels.

In the shower, you are provided shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I had so much appreciation for the bulk, low-waste dispensers vs travel-size containers.

A Few Nice Touches

Some things also provided in your cabin that you may have not considered but Postcard Cabins sure did:

  • A deck of cards

  • Books to read

  • Radio

  • First aid kit

  • Menstrual products

  • Wine opener

  • Lantern

  • Cellphone lockbox

  • AC and heat

  • Emergency Phone Line

What To Do at Postcard Cabins Dallas

Unplug

Don’t bother bringing your laptops with you, Postcard Cabins has no Wi-Fi! The atmosphere encourages you to silence your phone or better yet, turn it off and throw it into the cell phone lockbox in the cabin. Unplugging from your devices is probably one of the most valuable actions you can take during your time here.

Hike

Many of the Postcard Cabins locations have short hiking trails within the community. Visiting the Postcard website portal for the location you are staying in, you may also find some suggested hikes outside of your cabin location a short drive away. There are some great options for hiking trails near Dallas to check out such as:

Read a book

Dive into a good book surrounded by silence and beauty. Your cabin has a small selection available or bring your own book along.

Pitch a hammock

If you are lucky, your cabin will be surrounded by the perfect trees to pitch a hammock!

Roast marshmallows

You can’t have a glamping experience without roasting marshmallows over a fire. Good thing your Postcard Cabin comes with an outdoor fire pit, firewood, and fire starters!

Try your hand at cooking your meal over a fire

Get a fire going and cook a meal over the fire. We cooked vegan bacon and an assortment of vegetables.

Meditate/yoga

Breathe in the fresh air and be one with nature by getting outside for a yoga or meditation session.

Journal

Bring along a journal and spend a few minutes in your day reflecting inward and jot down your thoughts. I spent about 20 minutes a day journaling each of the days I spent at Postcard.

Do nothing

Don’t think, don’t worry about tomorrow, don’t allow the negativity of the news, work, or your stress during your stay here. Just “be.” And if that means doing nothing and turning off your thoughts, do that! Nature is a healer.

Postcard Cabins Dallas review

The Dallas Postcard Cabins is located in LaRue, TX in the Piney Woods of East Texas. It’s under 2 hours away from Dallas. I lived in the DFW area most of my life and didn’t realize the beauty just 2 hours from home!

From the moment our stay was booked to the moment we left our cabin on the final day, the process and ease we felt were unlike anything we had experienced before. I was going to put each of the below aspects on a 5-star rating scale but I found that each one of these experiences was 5 stars in my mind… So keep reading for my in-depth review instead.

Booking Your Stay

Booking on Postcard Cabins is as simple as:

  1. Choosing which outpost you’d like to visit

  2. Selecting how many guests and/or dogs will be staying

  3. Selecting how many beds you need (1 or 2)

  4. Date selection for check-in and check-out

  5. Put in your name and card information and you have yourself a little trip planned! It’s almost too easy…ha!

A few key aspects that are worth mentioning in the booking process are:

  • Postcard Cabins is partnered with Affirm. So if you can’t afford your stay in full upfront at booking, you can make payments over time.

  • Postcard Cabins offers “Cabin Packs.” These are night bundles you can purchase ahead of time for a cheaper cost and use whenever you’d like (when there are availabilities) at any of their locations. So purchase your bundle now, and use it later when you need the escape.

  • You can save $25 on your first stay using my referral link!

Navigating to the cabin

The address provided for Postcard Cabins Dallas was simple to navigate using Google Maps. On the day of your check-in, you will find out what cabin you will be staying in on what street in the community.

While they also provide a map of the community so you know where your cabin will be located, once you have made it there, streets and cabins are clearly marked making it easy to find your assigned stay.

Check-in Expectations

Postcard Cabins sent us an email once our cabin was done being cleaned and in that email provided the time of our check-in, directions, a map of the community (to save in case you lose cell service), which cabin we would be staying at, and the code to get into our cabin.

Upon arrival, there is no in-person check-in with staff. You just pull into your cabin’s driveway, put in the code you were given on the front door keypad, and you are home. That easy!

Inside, we were left by the staff pamphlets about the area, a handwritten note telling us to enjoy our stay, and some treats.

NOTE: While you don’t have to have any interaction whatsoever with the staff (who do have a location on site), they do have a number to call if you need anything such as a trash pick-up, more toilet paper, firewood, etc.

Our stay

The overall experience of staying in a small tiny house on wheels in the Piney Woods of East Texas was incredible.

Postcard Cabins is so well thought out that you will have total ease and comfort knowing you are surrounded by everything you could need in such a unique place. You won’t get bored here. Even if you don’t have cell service or the weather won’t allow you to get outside, there is plenty to do that helps you connect with the nature you are surrounded by inside or outside of your cabin.

We were lucky to have had such perfect weather with clear skies and cool weather in the 70’s so our time spent inside we had the windows open to let in the cool breeze and our time outside was spent on the walking trails or sitting around the fire pit talking and enjoying each others company.

The total seclusion of our cabin from the rest made deafening silence - much different than being in the city - besides the occasional other Postcard Cabins guests walking by or driving down the main road at the end of our cabin’s driveway.

Check-out Expectations

Again…totally seamless! No stress, no worry, no in-person contact. The morning of our check-out day, we received a text message from Postcard Cabins reminding us of our check-out time and how to check out. All we needed to do was clean up, lock up the house, and be on our way.

The Mental Reset & Final Thoughts

There is something so special and healing about being surrounded by nature. Away from your work, electronics, and social media that rule much of our everyday lives. When you put the mundane part of your life aside for a moment, a whole new joy and cleanse develops in a place like Postcard Cabins.

There is a quote that comes to mind by Eckhart Tolle when I think of Getaway;

“Nature can bring you to stillness, that is its gift to you.”

The point of Getaway (aka Postcard Cabins) is to get…away. RESET. Be. Be still. Enjoy the depths of happiness nature brings. For someone used to city life, this is the breath of fresh air you need to reset and go back to your normal life rejuvenated.
